Chapter 2: The Arrival

I’m not gonna lie, but I never felt so much fear. Everyone in Delta City felt the same way that night. The stories they told us when we were kids weren’t just stories after all. They spoke about how the machines appeared without a warning, without being got by any radars or satellites. There was nothing and then, there were them.

The first to arrive were the Drillers. I was working at the Vigilance Department when I heard the first impact and the entire building started shaking. And then bang! Another impact and another one after that.

I ran to the Control Center and all that you could see was dust showing up on the monitors. After a minute or so, I finally saw the first Driller moving. They have four long legs and an oval metal core. From what I call their “mouth”, an energy beam flew straight to the ground, cracking the earth.

Didn’t take long for chaos to take over. How could we avoid such a thing to happen anyway? These things from our childhood stories showing up like that. They weren’t just a hoax or a conspiracy, but real monsters made of metal.

The alert system sent the evacuation procedures as soon as the computer figured out what was happening. People should follow the emergency routes and seek shelter at The Arena. Truth is that the Drillers didn’t care about us at all. We could walk in front of it and they would just keep drilling. They had their task.

While helping with the evacuation I kept hearing the comms; other teams taking action against the invasors. So the bloodbath came upon us. As soon as we took the first Driller out of action, the Ghouls arrived. And I’ll never forget all those screams. Screams of pain and despair.

Ghouls have one goal only. Once they are activated it is all about killing. They keep moving forward no matter what. To stop a Ghoul you must cut every limb or blow its ass into a million pieces. Believe me, it’s not easy.

One thing you all must know about these metal things: they don’t care about politics or making deals. They are a ruthless entity moved by raw power.
That’s it.

At The Arena, parents held their kids tight while the city was burning outside. A part of me died inside when I saw the Lupa statue falling to the ground due to a Driller doing what they do.

And suddenly, there was…silence.

At that moment, I learned why we didn’t see them coming. There was a portal in the sky and the reason for all my nightmares since that day was passing through it.

I watched it, frozen with fear. That thing reminded me of a story someone told me on a Blood Moon night. The story was about the Cyklops’ arrival and all the suffering that came next.

The Swarm was back and ready to take every single thing that makes Argos our home. It was a Full Moon night.
